Paczkis

Have you ever heard of Paczki's? Pronounced POHNCH-kee. They are Polish doughnuts. But not ordinary doughnuts, these are really rich full of fat and eggs and sugar! The Polish traditionally make and eat these on Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. They are loaded with calories and fat and sweet goodness the likes of you've never seen before! Their last indulgence before Lent begins! In the old days, meat and meat byproducts, like butter and eggs, couldn't be eaten during Lent.The ingenious cooks would use up their eggs and butter and cream during Fat Week, Shrove Thursday to Shrove Tuesday. They are filled with fruit jams or cremes. I finally broke down this year and bought some. I couldn't pass up the cream cheese filled ones, I am a cream cheese freak! They were to die for! I did not want to share. I'm going back to the store and get another box. They are only around once a year! Unless I learn how to make them:)

  1. Peggy, you'll love it in Scotland, we have filled doughnuts like that all the year around, jam/jelly,chocolate or vanilla custard with fudge topping!

  2. I'm Polish and had never heard of them or had on until I moved to RI. They were awesome. I think my hips still show the effects of them, 5 years later:)

  4. Love them! My favorite are the custard-filled ones. My least favorite are the prune ones.
